Mr. Schliek has over twenty-eight years of fire and emergency services delivery experience. During this time he has served as Fire Chief for the City of Crosslake MN., and the City of Austin, MN. Mr. Schliek is serving in his nineteenth year as the President of the Cuyuna Range Fire Chiefs' Association. Additionally, Mr. Schliek has represented the Cuyuna Range Firefighters' Association on the Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board for over eighteen years. Presently, he holds the position of Chairman of the Board. He is in his third year in that assignment.

As the Fire Chief, Mr. Schliek was in charge of the day-to-day operations of the fire department. Preparation and administration of annual budgets, development and delivery of public fire education activities, oversight of department training, long range planning, and command of emergency incidents.

Serving as President of the Cuyuna Range Fire Chiefs' Association, has provided Mr. Schliek opportunities to work regionally, with thirty fire departments in north central Minnesota. During the past nineteen years, Mr. Schliek has worked extensively with the fire departments of the association to improve operational efficiencies. Succession planning activities, automatic mutual aid agreements, recruitment and retention possibilities, and incident data collection were areas researched and where partnerships were developed. Partnerships formed between member departments, as well as other emergency service providers benefited affected organizations. Legislative alliances and relationships have been built that help small rural fire departments work through difficult governmental mandates.

While serving as the Chairman of the Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board, Mr. Schliek has been instrumental in a statewide marketing campaign. This campaign has resulted in a dramatic increase of firefighters participating in the process across the state. During his tenure, Board membership has grown, as has the participation from professional fire service entities from the state of Minnesota.
